Piscataquis Regional Food Center Adjusts Service Area to Focus on Core Communities

Dover-Foxcroft, Maine, December 5, 2024 — Starting January 1, 2025, the Piscataquis Regional Food Center (PRFC) will focus its marketplace services exclusively on residents of Piscataquis County and the Dover-Foxcroft community. This adjustment, though difficult, ensures PRFC can continue to provide quality support to those most in need within their core service area.

In 2025, residents of Dover-Foxcroft, Atkinson, and Bowerbank will be invited to shop at the Food Center marketplace twice monthly. All other residents of Piscataquis County will be invited to shop once per month.

The agency began notifying shoppers of the change in early November. “This decision was not made lightly,” explained Kelly Sirimoglu, executive director of PRFC, “For the past 22 months, PRFC has supported hundreds of households each month, forging meaningful connections with the families we serve. However, as the number of households in need continues to rise, we are facing challenges that make it impossible to sustain our current service model.”

Since opening its doors on February 14, 2023, the Food Center has grown from serving 200 registered households to more than 750 registered households. The increase in demand, coupled with rising food costs has strained the organization's budget, forcing this difficult decision. By refocusing on Piscataquis County and Dover-Foxcroft, PRFC can ensure that neighbors most in need receive reliable, sustainable support.

A list of food agencies and community meal options is available on the PRFC website at www.prfoodcenter.org/food-cupboard-info.

“We are committed to serving the community with compassion and care, even as we navigate these challenging times,” Sirimoglu continued. “We deeply appreciate the understanding and support of donors, volunteers, and neighbors as we make this transition.”
