Cuts in Federal Programs Impact Local Hunger Initiatives

Recent changes in federal food assistance programs will affect the food available at Piscataquis Regional Food Center (PRFC). A federal food and funding freeze is now in effect, significantly reducing the amount of food available through key programs that support our work.

What’s Changing?

Loss of Local Food Purchase Assistance (LFPA) Funding – The USDA has canceled the LFPA25 extension, which means Maine will lose $1.25 million in funding over the next three years. As a result, Good Shepherd Food Bank will have 500,000-600,000 fewer pounds of fresh, local produce to distribute to food-insecure families through its partners, including PRFC and the Dover Foxcroft Area Food Center.

TEFAP Reductions Expected in April 2025 – The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP), which provides staple food products to food banks, is expected to shrink by 50%-65% per month, reducing the variety and quantity of food available.

How PRFC Is Responding

We remain committed to serving our community and ensuring access to nutritious food. To adjust to these challenges, we are:

  • Partnering with other food agencies to support one another and stretch resources further.

  • Keeping costs low so we can make the most of every dollar and donation.

  • Prioritizing health and nutrition to provide the most nourishing options possible.

What This Means for Our Shoppers

Starting March 17th, PRFC will reduce the number of items available per household. This step is necessary to make sure we can continue serving as many people as possible in the coming months.

We know this is a difficult change, and we appreciate your patience and support.
